Bolton v Oxford preview

Bolton survived a bit of a scare in their League One play-off semi-final victory over Barnsley last weekend to book themselves a place at Wembley, where they now find themselves just 90 minutes away from securing promotion to the Championship ahead of next season.

Ian Evatt’s side overcame the Yorkshire side 5-4 on aggregate, which ended up being a closer tie than many expected after the Trotters had won 3-1 at Oakwell in the first leg.

Barnsley scored twice in the final half hour at Bolton last Tuesday night, getting themselves to within just one more goal of forcing the tie into extra time, but the Manchester side held on to book their place at Wembley.

Bolton went into their play-off campaign as favourites to be the ones to join Portsmouth and Derby in being promoted from League One this season having finished third in the table, 10 points clear of the opponents they’ll be facing on Saturday afternoon.

Evatt’s make the trip to the capital having lost just one of their last nine games, which came in last weekend’s semi final, and currently find themselves odds on favourites for promotion this weekend.

Promotion would secure Bolton’s first time back in the second tier since their relegation in 2019, from which they suffered back-to-back relegations into League Two before returning and now aiming for a second tier return after three seasons in League One.

Oxford head into Wembley’s final as underdogs for victory but have already upset the odds in reaching Saturday’s match, seeing off a Peterborough side who finished above them in the table and were back for victory 2-1 on aggregate across both legs.

Des Buckingham’s side finished the season fifth in the third tier, and head into the weekend in good form having lost just one of their last 10 matches.

The Us will be aiming to reach the second tier of the footballing pyramid for the first time this century after suffering relegation from Division One, as it was known then, in 1999, in which time they’ve have since dropped out of the Football League and are now just 90 minutes from a second tier return.

The Oxfordshire side head into their bout with Bolton having won only one of their last eight matches against the Trotters, which includes a 5-0 defeat the last time the two sides met, at the Toughsheet Community Stadium back in March.
