Des Buckingham proud of U’s for raising awareness in aftermath of young fan’s death

Abingdon United midfielder Badger, a U’s fan, took his own life and died aged 24 earlier this month.

In the 24th minute of United’s goalless draw at home to Burnley yesterday, there was a brilliantly observed minute’s applause for Badger.

Buckingham meanwhile sported a jumper during the game to raise awareness for Boys Get Sad Too, which supports men’s mental health.

He said: “That’s what maybe differentiates us from other clubs, certainly at high levels. We are a community club, and I think you see the reaction from what it is extremely sad news with Jack.

“But you see the coming together of a community, to support him and raise awareness of how important speaking to people is, especially as young men.

“Whether it’s reaching out or otherwise, where we can raise some awareness in that and help in any space, to his family in the short-term now.

“If that can be a round of applause or raising money in helping do that, then great, but the greater scheme is to try and raise awareness.

“It’s okay to speak to people, it’s okay to reach out, it’s okay to ask for help, and that’s what I really love about this club. It’s a community club and a big part as to why I came back here.”
