Former U’s defender one game from managing in the Football League

The 39-year-old’s Solihull Moors side emphatically booked a place in the Vanarama National League play-off final at Wembley thanks to a thumping 4-0 thrashing of a Barnet team without U’s loanee Gatlin O’Donkor.

James Clarke headed Whing’s side into a sixth minute lead, before former Banbury United striker Jack Stevens’ low drive doubled the advantage 20 minutes later.

Any hope of a fightback was pretty much extinguished just past the hour mark when Tahvon Campbell finished a loose ball in the box. Joe Sbarra prodded home a minute from time to complete the scoring.

Whing told the Moors’ YouTube channel: “What a time to get our best performance of the season. I thought our game plan and game management was second to none.

“We stopped them playing, and I think they ran out of ideas. To a man, we were outstanding.

“I’m absolutely delighted. We never expected this, but we always had belief. We knew we could come here and win.”
