‘I owe him a beer’: U’s CEO thanks John Mousinho for his part in play-off drama

Williams, who has previously served as chief financial officer at Inter Milan and group financial controller at Manchester United, celebrated with the U’s players and staff on the pitch after a top six spot was earned.

Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan gave United a 2-0 lead at Exeter City, with Millenic Alli pulling a goal back seven minutes into the second period.

Results elsewhere, including Portsmouth’s win at Lincoln City, lifted the U’s up to fifth in the final standings.

Williams said: “It’s been emotional. What a day, and what an incredible end to the season. I’m not really sure what I was expecting out of today, but I’m so happy for the boys.

“They played incredibly well, especially in the first half. Thanks to John Mousinho as well, I’ve got to give credit to the Portsmouth guys for doing their job.

“It’s been an incredible end to the season, to finish fifth after some of the ups and downs that we’ve had.

“I’m genuinely delighted and thrilled for the fans who came here in their numbers. Thank you for taking the journey down, coming here and supporting in the numbers as you did. It’s been a great day.”

He added: “It’s all about the football today. I don’t really think about the numbers, and quite a few people might be surprised to hear that, but this is about the football, the fans and the team.

“I’m just so pleased that what we’ve done this season is exactly what we set out to do, to make the play-offs and be better than what we were last season.”

Former United captain Mousinho had already led Pompey to the League One title, but did his old side a favour by taking all three points at Sincil Bank.

Williams said: “I texted John last week just to say ‘come on John, do us a favour’ and I’ve just sent him a message now to say thank you. I owe him a beer.”
