BHOPAL: The city crime branch on Wednesday claimed to have busted an online betting racket and nabbed a jeweller involved in betting on cricket matches at his home in Professor Colony in posh Shamla Hills locality.
The accused had purchased login ID and password to bet online through an online betting website at Rs 3 lakh. He not only placed the bets himself but also accepted from other clients. Police seized his mobile phone in which they found betting records worth lakhs. Police found his links connected to a Mumbai-based online betting network. Police were searching for the other accused associated with the racket.
Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Shailendra Singh Chouhan said that police had received information from a trusted source that accused Rakesh Soni, 53, a resident of a flat in Professor Colony in Shamla Hills, was involved in online betting on cricket matches. Acting on information, a police team raided the spot with a search warrant.
Police teams showed their ID to the woman, who opened the door, and entered the flat. They found Rakesh sitting on a sofa and betting on cricket matches through his mobile phone.
Police teams found that he was betting through an app of a betting website installed on his smartphone. Police team seized his phone along with Rs 10250 found in his possession. He told police that he earned the seized money by betting online on cricket matches.
Additional DCP Chouhan said that the accused Rakesh runs a jewellery shop. He revealed that he purchased the login ID to place bets online through the mobile application for Rs 3 lakh. He also suffered a loss in his business due to his betting habit. Police have received information from him about the people who supplied him the betting ID. Search was on to nab the other accused.
