Oxford United man wanted by ‘several’ clubs, report suggests

Oxford United defender Stephan Negru is wanted by ‘several’ clubs this summer, as per a report by the Irish Mirror.

Oxford United have a decision to make regarding the long-term future of the Irishman ahead of the next transfer window.

Negru, 21, has seen his game time with the League One side dry up recently.

According to the Irish Mirror, he has emerged on the radar of other teams and his situation at the Kassam Stadium is up in the air.

Oxford United signed Negru back in January 2023 and he played twice during the second-half of last season under their former boss Liam Manning, who is now at Bristol City in the Championship.

He has since made 19 appearances in all competitions in this campaign, 13 of which have come in the league, but he hasn’t featured since February.

The U’s extended his contract last September after some impressive performances but he has lost his place in the team recently under Des Buckingham.

Prior to his move to England, Negru rose up through the ranks at Shelbourne and broke into their starting XI as a teenager.

He played nine times for the League of Ireland outfit before his switch to Oxford United.

Buckingham’s side have secured their place in the play-offs following their 2-1 away win at Exeter City on the final day. Mark Harris and Cameron Brannagan got their goals against the Grecians.

They now face Peterborough United at the semi-finals stage as they look to book their place at Wembley in the final against either Bolton Wanderers or Barnsley. Blackpool and Lincoln City missed out on the top six last weekend.
