Police seize baseball bat and golf club from gang after man ‘assaulted officer’

Thames Valley Police officers in Abingdon were enduring a busy set of shifts last week when they encountered the group of young people.

The gang were in Abbey Gardens and were spotted with a baseball bat and a golf club which were then seized by the on-duty officers.

In what was an incredibly busy week, the same officers also pursued a man on foot after suspecting him of assaulting an off-duty officer.

The man was then detained until other Thames Valley Police officers arrived at the scene to help.

A spokesperson for the force said: “PCSOs Wright, Islam, & Crowther & PCs Musat & Roberts from the Abingdon Neighbourhood Team had a busy set of shifts last week. They….

“Identified a group of young people with a baseball bat & golf club in Abbey Gardens, officers conducted stop searches. The items were seized, as they weren’t playing sport with them!

“Pursued on foot a man suspected of assaulting an off-duty officer, detained him until officers arrived on scene.

“Responded to a report of two missing young girls from Botley. There was a real fear for their safety, but both were found safe & well.

”Assisted with first aid on two occasions in the town centre.”
