Sports writer supports chest clinic at Churchill Hospital

It was formed in 1904 to cater for those who couldn’t play on Saturdays because they were working.

It closed in 1978 as support dwindled, but officials were determined that the name should live on.

Sports writer John Parsons, left, president of the Thursday Football social club, is seen handing a £200 portable breathing machine to consultant chest physician Dr Bill Hamilton. It was to be used in the chest clinic at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Mr Parsons covered Oxford United matches for the Oxford Mail before joining the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.

He said: “This will maintain the name of the Thursday League.”
