If you’re fully invested in all things astrology, you may find yourself Googling question after question as your knowledge on the subject expands and more curiosities arise. And while there’s tons of information out there about each zodiac sign’s characteristics, traits, and compatibilities to satiate even the most curious cat, but what about prevalence?
Do you ever wonder how many other people out there are the same Sun sign as you? Do you ever feel like you’re always running into a Pisces or making friends with Scorpios, but somehow, you’ve never met a Capricorn? Well, believe it or not, there is evidence that shows some zodiac signs are rarer than others.
Statistically, a few signs tend to compete for the titles of rarest and most common of the zodiac. These consistent changes are only natural since global events have a major impact on population outcomes. “These will shift from year to year as birth rates are impacted by many things, including the pandemic,” says Lauren Ash, resident astrologer for Sanctuary Astrology and the host of weekly pop astrology podcast Birth Chart Pls. Other factors, such as the weather and holidays, also play a role in when people decide to conceive, which obviously impacts the most and least common birth months.

What is the rarest zodiac sign?
Drumroll, please… Aquarius is the rarest zodiac sign. Water-bearer babies tend to be few and far between because February is the least common birth month, according to the CDC. Additionally, the overlap period between January and February is the shortest astrologically, says Ash.
What are the traits of the rarest zodiac sign?
Aquarians are known to be the rebels of astrology. “Co-ruled by Saturn, the planet of karma, discipline, and structure, as well as Uranus, the rebellious change-maker, Aquarians are known to challenge the status quo,” says Ash. They’re often progressive and independent humanitarians who don’t shy away from questioning authority to create a fair environment, she adds.
Aquarians may also value friendships more than their romantic relationships since they don’t like to be emotionally weighed down, says Constance Stellas, a New-York based astrologer and author of Advanced Astrology for Life.
Which signs are most compatible with Aquarius?
Aquarians are picky about whom they pay attention to, but some signs such as Libra, Gemini, Aries, and Sagittarius can each make for a strong pair. This is mainly because Aquarius takes a liking to those who are curious, rebellious, and interesting. They want to be pushed outside their comfort zone, and their fellow air signs and fire signs can assist with that.
Aquarius also has a strong connection with Leo. In fact, they’re the epitome of “opposites attract.” Six months apart from one another, they sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel.
Because of this, the pair knows how to get a rise out of each other in a way other signs may not. “Aquarius and Leo can be the most interesting and explosive relationship of them all,” says Ash. “If these two characters can figure out how to communicate their feelings and work on seeing things from the other’s point of view, the chemistry between Aquarius and Leo can be a once-in-a-lifetime match.”
What is the most common zodiac sign?
It is believed that the most common zodiac sign falls somewhere between Leo and Virgo. A 1994 to 2014 study that calculated average births per month indicates that Virgos were the most common sign for decades.
But in recent years, the highest number of births have occurred between July and August, according to demographer Brady Hamilton with the National Center for Health Statistics, per Live Science. Because the birth date range for Leos spans from July 23 to about August 22, it seems like that sign is currently the most common.
What is the second rarest zodiac sign?
Coming in second place for the rarest sign is none other than Capricorn. Similar to the circumstances with Aquarius, there are not many babies born around winter holidays such as Christmas and New Year, according to data collected between 1973 and 1999 by The New York Times.
“Like Aquarius, Capricorn is also influenced by Saturn, the planet of karma and tough lessons,” says Ash. “So, it’s interesting to think how the two rarest signs of the zodiac often deal with feelings of isolation, struggle, and loneliness as they learn to mature into their gifts.”
What about Ophiuchus?
ICYDK, NASA has reportedly made small changes to the constellation map due to the Ophiuchus Galaxy Cluster, which has led many people to think there is a 13th zodiac sign. However, that’s not the case.
“Essentially, Ophiuchus is a constellation but not a zodiac sign. So this change marks a shift in the constellations themselves, but not any of the established zodiac dates, signs, or associated traits,” explains Ash. “Western astrology is based on the apparent path of the Sun as seen from our position on Earth, rather than following the movement of the visible stars—everything about the zodiac sign dates remains the same even as the universe keeps expanding and the celestial bodies shift over time.”
So if you’re worried that you’ve been aligned with the wrong zodiac sign, you can rest easy knowing you’re right where you’re supposed to be.
